A further step was taken in developing the consortium of Scuola Normale Superiore, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and IUSS. On Saturday May 13th at the Normale University in Pisa, Palazzo della Carovana, 10.30 am, the Minister for Education, Universities and Research Valeria Fedeli  will meet the faculty members of the three top universities. On the occasion of the meeting, the faculty members will explain the distinctive features of the institutes for advanced studies and their proposed joint governance model.

Vincenzo Barone (rector of Normale), Pierdomenico Perata (rector of Sant’Anna) and Michele Di Francesco (rector of Iuss) have been discussing terms of reference agreed regarding specific roles and institutional aims and objectives to offer unique excellence in education. Scuola Normale Superiore, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and IUSS are the only universities in Italy where the students are selected on the basis of academic excellence and merit. Normale, Sant’Anna and IUSS offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses and full tuition fee waivers. Normale and Sant’Anna (in Tuscany) and IUSS (in Lombardy) offer opportunities in different academic areas of teaching and research and they are deeply committed to ensuring that all their students can obtain maximum benefits, reflecting the UK higher education system.

A new model of joint governance structure and practice is taking shape; a single Board of Governors will develop a common policy as a way of supporting university directors and leadership teams in developing and maintaining excellence also by adopting and implementing the collective core values and expectations. Normale, Sant’Anna and IUSS joint open day will be held on June 26, 2017 in Pisa, San Miniato and Pavia; two additional events will be announced.

Minister Valeria Fedeli will focus on “Consortium of Institutes of Advanced Studies: developing research excellence to address the challenges of the future”. Keynote speakers include: Donatella Della Porta, Dean of Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at Normale, giving her speech “Lo sviluppo del polo formativo di eccellenza della Scuola Normale presso la sede di Firenze in collaborazione con la Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna”; Sabina Nuti, Professor of Strategic Management at Sant’Anna, “I nuovi progetti congiunti di mobilità sociale”; Andrea Ferrara, Professor of Astrophysics at Normale, “Il progetto Erc InterStellar: le buone prassi nella ricerca internazionale al servizio della federazione”; Lucia Lencioni, chief executive of Wearable Robotics, “La spin off Wearable Robotics: le buone prassi del trasferimento tecnologico al servizio della federazione”; Ricardo Monteiro, researcher of Constructions Materials Engineering at Iuss, “Il progetto Iterate: le buone prassi nella ricerca internazionale per la prevenzione dei rischi al servizio della federazione”.

Minister Valeria Fedeli will draw conclusions on future prospects for public research universities and the efficient funding of higher education institutions.
